Total Purity Concept for the Finest Sound Quality
The Total Purity Concept, which Yamaha has been cultivating for many years, encompasses high drive amp technology, high purity pre-amplification, anti-vibration technology and independent pure power supplies. All models have a fully discrete power amplifier that helps to minimize distortion. They also adopt independent pure power supplies, allowing dedicated power supplies for the analog and digital circuitry to prevent digital noise from affecting analog circuitry. The anti-vibration heatsinks are designed to suppress vibration from transistors and sound pressure. Independent power supplies for the DACs are designed to further eliminate noise on certain models. Down to every detail, these AV receivers are designed with full emphasis on the highest possible sound quality.
Extensive Audio Codec and Format Support
This AV receiver is compatible with many audio formats such as Dolby® TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio™. They are also compatible with FLAC/WAV 192 kHz playback. You will enjoy excellent Blu-ray Disc™ sound quality and other types of high resolution sources.

Intelligent Amp Assign
Intelligent Amp Assign automatically assigns amplifier channels to certain speakers depending on what functions are selected. For example, in a 7.1-channel system, when Zone 2 is off, all 7.1 channels will be used in the Main Zone. However, when Zone 2 is on, power to the two surround back channels will be directed to the two speakers in Zone 2 and the Main Zone will receive 5.1 channels of power. Similarly, when CINEMA DSP 3D is on, the two Front Presence speakers will be powered and not the two surround back speakers. When CINEMA DSP 3D is off, this situation is reversed. Thanks to Intelligent Amp Assign, there's no need to switch the speaker cables on the rear of the receiver — one more way Yamaha makes your life a little easier.
Ultra HD (4K) Pass-through and Upscaling Supports Latest High Resolution Video Formats
This AV receiver's HDMI input/output supports Ultra HD (4K) video image pass-through. It also can perform Ultra HD (4K) upscaling to boost a lower resolution image to super high-def resolution. This ensures compatibility with the latest super high resolution video formats.
HDMI® with 3D and Audio Return Channel
3D means the receiver can handle 3D signal data. The Audio Return Channel function enables data to be sent and received via the same HDMI cable so you can hear the sound from the TV via a single HDMI cable with no need for an extra optical cable.
High Quality Video Processing with Edge Adaptive Deinterlacing
In ordinary deinterlacing, pixels in areas of movement are interpolated by upper and lower ranges. This causes jaggies in diagonal lines. Edge adaptive deinterlacing detects the direction of the line and interpolates the pixels optimally.
SCENE for One-touch Start
Pressing a SCENE button powers on the AV receiver and selects the input source and DSP mode. You can reset the buttons for different sources by selecting a source and DSP mode then pressing a SCENE button for more than three seconds.
HDMI CEC for Easy Operation
Another benefit of HDMI is the availability of CEC functionality. When the unit is connected to a CEC compatible TV, it will turn on and off together with the TV and you can use the TV remote to control the volume. CEC also provides advanced functionality with other components. For example, you can use the receiver's remote unit to control player functions like skip and stop.
*All connected devices must be HDMI CEC compatible. Some CEC compatible TVs/players may not work.
AirPlay Allows Streaming Music to AV Receiver
This AV receiver supports AirPlay, which means they can accept wireless music streaming from iPod® touch, iPhone® or iPad®, as well as from iTunes on Macs or PCs. This makes it easy to enjoy music from your mobile devices or computer on your home theater system. You can use view metadata such as song title, artist name as well as album art* via the AV receiver's on-screen display.
*Some models don't support album art display.
AV Controller App for Easy, Convenient Operation
This AV receiver lets you use the Yamaha AV Controller App that is downloadable from the iTunes App Store or Google Play to control power on/off and volume, select input and DSP modes and operate other functions from an iPhone® or Android™ devices. You can also use in as many as 23* different languages and customize the interface by hiding unused icons and renaming functions. A tablet version is also available.
*As of Spring 2013.
Network Functions
This AV receiver provides a variety of network functions that enable you to access more sources and also enhance operation. You can connect the receiver to a PC to enjoy Internet radio, Pandora® and Rhapsody®, and operate your system via WebBrowser Control. The AV Controller App (from iTunes App Store or Google Play) lets you control various functions from your iPod®, iPhone®, iPad® or Android devices.

MHL® (Mobile High-Definition Link) Support for High Quality Video and Audio
MHL provides easy, direct connection of compatible mobile phones and this AV receiver. Playback of up to 1080p video and multi-channel audio from the phone is supported. The receiver also charges the connected phone. Play, Stop and other basic operations can be controlled from the remote control.
USB Digital Connection for iPod, iPhone and iPad on the Front Panel
A USB port on the front panel allows convenient connection of an iPod/iPhone/iPad, which also charges when connected. Because the digital signal from the iPod/iPhone/iPad is transmitted directly to the AV receiver, there is no signal loss or interference, so you enjoy the best possible sound quality. In addition, you can use the receiver's remote control unit to operate the iPod/iPhone/iPad music playback functions.
Advanced Multi-language GUI On-screen Display
Yamaha's latest graphical user interface has a high resolution display with clear, easy-to-use menus and also includes a selectable status bar that shows input source, volume level, DSP mode and audio format. The GUI provides a choice of eight languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Japanese and Chinese and can be displayed over both normal and 3D pictures.
YPAO-R.S.C. (Reflected Sound Control) Sound Optimization
YPAO-R.S.C. analyzes room acoustics and measures various speaker characteristics, then calibrates audio parameters to achieve optimum sound. It employs Reflected Sound Control to correct early reflections for studio-quality sound. It also provides DSP Effect Normalization, which varies the CINEMA DSP parameters according to the reflected sounds.
HDMI Front Panel Input
In addition to the large number of HDMI inputs on the rear panel, there is also one on the front panel. This gives you a convenient way to quickly plug in a digital camera or camcorder for highest quality pictures.
Input Selection in HDMI Standby Through Mode
When the AV receiver is in HDMI Standby Through mode, the input source (Blu-ray Disc™ player, game console, etc.) for viewing on the monitor can be changed via the remote control. There's no need to turn on the AV receiver in order to switch sources.

HD Audio with CINEMA DSP 3D and Virtual Presence Speaker
CINEMA DSP 3D provides a wide, high and dense sound field. HD Audio format decoding lets you enjoy HD Audio sources. Virtual Presence Speaker delivers 3-dimensional sound without actual use of presence speakers.
Dialogue Lift and Dialogue Level Adjustment for Natural Dialogue and Vocals
Dialogue Lift raises the sound of dialogue from the center speaker to a position in the center of the screen. Newly developed virtual dialogue lift achieves dialogue lift function even without the need for presence speakers. Dialogue Level Adjustment lets you control the volume of the vocal sound, so you hear movie dialogue and music vocals at the ideal level for clear, comfortable listening.
Adaptive DRC (Dynamic Range Control)
Adaptive DRC automatically adjusts the dynamic range of the sound according to the volume level. This ensures that you hear clear dialogue and vocals and all sound effects at comfortable levels. There is no need to adjust the volume level as you listen; everything from whispers to big explosions will be heard clearly and comfortably at the same volume setting. It also tones down loud TV commercials and is ideal for low-volume, late-night listening when you do not want to disturb others.
New Virtual CINEMA DSP for 7.1-channel Surround Sound
New Virtual CINEMA DSP provides virtual 7.1-channel surround sound from only front speakers (2.1-channel), with no need for rear speakers. Using new 24 kHz HRTF (Head-related Transfer Function) technology, it creates a rear sound field that is extremely spacious, natural and powerful.

I ended up with this receiver because I needed a simpler way for my family to watch video on our home theater projector and have the proper audio play. I previously had my home theater set up through a receiver that did not have HDMI input. So, I bought an HDMI splitter and a SPIDF splitter to route the video to the projector and the audio to the receiver. That worked fine for me, but my wife and kids constantly struggled with it (understandably). This unit has solved my problems. It's very simple for anyone to use because of the SCENE button functions. Also, now all of my components (PS3- serves as a 3D Blu Ray and game console, WD-TVLive, and cable box) all run through the receiver so that whatever video source you select you will also get the correct audio. My additional goal with this receiver was to have the ability to power my very expensive AR speakers that are 4 Ohms. Many receivers nowadays will not accommodate that, and you will burn the receiver up. This receiver will allow you to connect 4 Ohm speakers to the front channel (you must change a setting in the receiver). This receiver sounds great for movies. I bought the Yamaha YBA-11 Bluetooth audio receiver. The setup was easy, and it sounds great streaming from Amazon Music on iPhone or Android device. I played with some of the other feature like the built in Pandora and the internet radio. They sound good, but are probably not of much use to me. I hard wired this with an Ethernet cable from a switch that I had setup to provide internet connections to my other device. I did have to do a firmware update right out of the box.
CONS: The manual only comes on a CD, or you can read it online (not very handy, but acceptable), The buttons and text on the remote are tiny, and not backlit.
So far it is working, which is worth at least 2 stars. It sounds good, and does what it says, worth a third star. It does upconvert, switch easily between inputs, and have every feature available that it says it should, which is worth a fourth star to me. To be worth five stars it would have to be perfect. I am new to Yamaha electronics, and not an audiophile, I do have many years experience going up through the quality/feature rankings to get to this point (not very high, but I came from my first $150 dvd home theater system from best buy 15 year ago). I hate to say it but this falls just short of the Onkyo TX-NR616 receiver I bought a couple years ago.
Audio quality is as expected. The Onkyo has a nice Onkyo speaker system with it in our main living room. This is stuck with the old Philips speakers from the old receiver/dvd combo we had, downstairs along with a new Polk sub. I wouldn't expect the same quality out of the Philips speakers as the Onkyos, and I'm not getting it, but I can't fault the Receiver. The only difference I've seen so far is in the setup and control.
Setup was easier, only by a small margin, with the Onkyo. Control is definitely easier with the Onkyo, and some of that feeling is a result of using it for over 2 years before getting the Yamaha, but not all of it. The Onkyo has the Blu-Ray, Sat, Game, PC, FM, and 6 more all labeled with their own customizable settings and selection button on the remote (and I use those particular inputs). The Yamaha only has 4 inputs preset, and only numbered, not labeled. It does allow more inputs, but does not allow you to preset all the features. I feel if the inputs were labeled and not only numbered, and included a full array of common inputs the Yamaha would have been worth a full 5 stars (it is that close (without a lot of use)). I can live with a slightly more difficult setup, as I only should have to do it once. To put is in perspective, my 4 year old daughter can turn on, and switch inputs on the Onkyo (to whichever she wants that day), but hasn't figured out the Yamaha yet (only a small difference, but that can mean a lot when not used everyday).
I can tell you I have heard of many people having problems with Onkyo HDMI boards in the recent past (It would seen to be only receivers newer than the 616, but I haven't looked into it enough to tell for sure). I paid almost exactly the same for these two receivers, and am fortunate to not have had problems with the Onkyo in over 2 years of constant, almost every day use. To this point it has not been a problem, and will continue to earn a 5 star rating from me until it does have a problem. I believe an item like this should last at least 10 years, so if it dies, I will be lowering that rating. I know I bought the Onkyo a couple years ago, and paid a similar price for it, but it does have a few more features than this Yamaha and in electronics a couple years is an eternity, so this should have many more features for the price (another reason for four stars only).
Again, I am not a sound guru, or have a great ear for what sounds good in comparison to other systems (I could hook it up to the Onkyo speakers and have my father-in-law come over and listen for that, but that would be too much work for a review). We'll see what he thinks when I hook it up in the camper. I don't need much there, and my daughter certainly doesn't, but he'd know the difference. He has spent many thousands of dollars on sound systems (mainly for music), and believes our Onkyo sounds great for the money we paid.

The issue with this one is when changing soundfields the screen turns off for 3 seconds, and then it resumes. Or if you're trying multiple soundfields the sound cuts out for a few seconds and then comes back. It's hard to make comparisons of different soundfields when there's a time lapse between each selection. But that's not what really peeved me off.
It arrived with no manual! This is the first time buying a Yamaha product that no manual was included. I placed a call with the vendor asking for a manual and received no reply. Sure I can see one online but then I have to go room to room to see how to do something which is time consuming and very frustrating. Every time I want to understand something about the amp I have to start up the computer, open the pdf and find the section and then start going back and forth to compare differences. I've been very loyal to Yamaha for many years but with these problems I am rethinking my choice for the main theater room. I've sent an email by way of Amazon as well. If I hear from them I will update this review. Otherwise you may want to rethink buying from vendors other than Yamaha or new from Amazon.
Too bad, Yamaha has been great until this.
