BenQ W1070 Review

Large Picture For a Small Theater Room

BenQ W1070 review

Immediately when we unpack the W1070, it is obvious that it is built for the small cinema room. It is compact and really nimble. A further sign of this is that the projection is huge even at a small distance from the screen.

SUMMARY

BenQ W1070 is a projector in the entry-level segment, offering a solid performance with Full HD and 3D at a low price.

PLUS
Bright.
Colour reproduction.
Lens shift.
Low amount of rainbow effects.
Price.
MINUS
The remote lacks backlighting.
3D glasses not included.

At 6.5 feet we're up to 79 inches in full zoom mode, which can lead to placement difficulties in larger rooms. In contrast, the W1070 get a big plus point for having lens shift that have so far been restricted to models in a much higher price range. But the control for it could of course have been something better than a small screw.

Brutal Picture For The Money

The image quality the W1070 delivers is impressive. It is bright and the color reproduction is excellent, with better blacks than I´d normally expect at this price. Smart Eco mode offers dynamic contrast and lower power consumption. And as a bonus, it leads to improved blacks and rich shadow detail. If you are sensitive to a DLP projectors proverbial rainbow effects, you can relax – they are virtually non-existent and only noticable if you´re really looking for it. W1070 supports 3D (including 3D blu-ray) and does a good job with a striking 3D experience without any major problems with so-called crosstalk. The active 3D glasses are unfortunately sold separately, however, and you can check them out here.

Conclusion

With a picture quality and advanced features as good as this, it´s easy to think that BenQ have skimped on other important details. But this is not the case. Benq W1070 is a seriously competent projector at a low price that can compete with much more expensive projectors. The build quality and connectivity, including dual HDMI inputs, are in place and the setting options are extensive. The noise level from the fan is not as low as one would like, but perfectly acceptable. The remote control is slick and you do not have to think about where you point it, but backlighting would have been nice to have in a dark room. All in all, highly recommended!
