SUMMARY

The Sonos Playbar is one of the more advanced sound bars and is best used to stream music via DLNA.

PLUS
Well made streaming.
Beautiful sound of music.
A decent foundation that can be built on.
MINUS
Some limited dynamics with movies.

Everything is controlled elegantly from the Sonos Controller app for Android and iOS. Even more fun is that you can make playlists that download songs from various sources - choose one from your computer, add the next from Spotify and the third from Wimp, and so on. Everything works seamlessly.

The TV is connected via optical cable. Playbar does not support Dolby Digital or DTS, so the TV must be set to "PCM" instead of "bitstream" in the menu system.

The sound is very good. The dialogue in ‘Star Trek: Into Darkness‘ is mellow and resolved. This is the most natural sound of all the sound bars we´ve tested and Playbar has a richer bass than the others, even without a subwoofer. You´ll get even heavier bass if you connect the subwoofer Sonos SUB. You can even get true surround sound if you supplement with two Sonos Play:1 rear speakers. The possibilities are great. But Sonos Playbar works fine on its own too.

Playbar does not have the same dynamics in the midrange as the Yamaha YSP-1400, but on the other hand sounds more resolved and well balanced. Though personally I prefer the Yamaha when I watch movies.

Music is something else entirely. Sonos Playbar is clearly at its best when playing music. This is a very well-built sound bar, which, with its 35 inches width fits TVs from 40 inches and up.
